Lucha Underground Review - 1/7/15: Aztec Warfare!

If I could use just one word to describe this match, the word would be: INSANITY. To be honest, Aztec Warfare is seriously a match that is pay-per-view worthy. Yes, I know you’re thinking, “What an outrageous claim, the company just started a couple of months ago!” However, there is no denying the athleticism and great crowd reactions throughout the entire match. I would like to see other promotions top this gauntlet-style match. Without further ado, here are my thoughts. Hope you enjoy!

To start things off, my favorites in this match were the likes of Prince Puma, Johnny Mundo, Dario Cueto’s main henchman, Big Ryck and the (then) undefeated Mil Muertes. These four in particular had their own advantages. For instance, Johnny Mundo wins the $100,000 briefcase, Puma is under the tutelage of veteran Konnan (who did not appear on this episode), Mil Muertes is the unstoppable force (along with his seemingly “licking obsessed” Catrina), and of course, Big Ryck, who is one of Dario Cueto’s insurance policies.

I loved how rapid and fast-paced the action was, being that a new entrant was coming out every 90 seconds. Those 90 seconds felt like 30, dude. The ladies were also allowed in match, with Ivelisse and Sexy Star being participants. I also loved how feuds were being continued during this match, too. I mean, Blue Demon, Jr. made his long awaited to return to get revenge against Chavo Guerrero, and help Sexy Star eliminate him.

There were a few luchadors who dominated with eliminations. Johnny Mundo and Chavo Guerrero eliminated four other luchadors a piece! Mundo and Fenix are also tied for surviving the longest, lasting through 18 entrants before being eliminated.
The final two competitors – Mundo and Puma had me standing on end with their sequences. Especially when they kept kicking out of each other’s signature moves. In the end, Puma eliminated Mundo to become the inaugural Lucha Underground Champion after hitting the most beautiful 630 splash since Jack Evans.

Now, that Puma’s the champion, he seems to be – in my opinion, the man that will very be the torch carrier for Lucha Underground, and if ya ask me, it seems more fitting for him to be the first champion, since he is so over with the Lucha Underground fanbase.

Lucha Underground has a bright future in 2015, and Lucha is here to stay!
